“We’d been looking for eggs because we thought we’d have to remove them and incubate them separately for them to have any chance of hatching,” said senior aquarist Scott Blacker.

Named after rock stars Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix and Jethro Tull, all three seal pups are currently undergoing treatment in the Seal Rescue Centre – an onsite seal hospital at the SEA LIFE Centre.

Every season we chose a theme for naming any rescued seal pups and when Joni came in as loud as she did, we just knew it had to be rock stars” said Lyndsey Crawford

“She is incredibly vocal and now she is well on the road to recovery, even seems to be enjoying the attention and posing for photographs” she continued

All three seal pups weighed a mere 9kgs each – a shocking 11kgs under the ideal weight for their age.

“We were very concerned about how small they all were when they were rescued which leads us to think that they may have been abandoned before they have learnt to fend for themselves” said Lyndsey.

Jimi was actually rescued from the rocks right outside the SEA LIFE Centre after a concerned passer-by raised the alarm upon spotting him wedged between some rocks struggling to free himself.

“After a mad dash to rescue him, Jimi is still very poorly. He is incredibly underweight and has an abscess on his nose. He is on a course of antibiotics to fight the infection and hopefully should be feeling better in no time” said Lyndsey

All three seal pups will be released back into the wild when they reach 35kgs and have a strong chance of survival

The appeal comes from Brighton SEA LIFE Centre…whose boss Max Leviston heads out to Greece next week to help plan the next phase of development on the rescue centre.

“It’s really coming together,” said Max. “Our partners in this project the Zante-based group Earth, Sea & Sky have made fantastic progress. We’re now making a big push to try and get it open and ready to take casualties by May next year, at the start of the 2011 turtle breeding season.”

Zante hosts a thousand or more loggerhead turtle nests every summer, but the traditional nesting beaches of these ancient animals are under increasing pressure from tourism.

“We want to get the rescue centre finished to give any adult turtles that get injured a fighting chance of recovering and producing future offspring,” said Max.

Brighton SEA LIFE Centre is home to loggerhead sea turtle Jersey, named after the Channel island where he stranded as a youngster nearly sixty years ago.

“Turtle conservation has been a special focus for us for many years, but the completion and launch of the new facility in Zante will be a particularly satisfying achievement.”

Proceeds and models can be sent or delivered any time before Sunday, September 5th, to the SEA LIFE Centre at Marine Parade, Brighton, Sussex <st1:PostalCode w:st="on">BN2 1TB</st1:PostalCode>. In return children will get a free SEA LIFE Centre admission, and whoever raises the most cash will win a SEA LIFE Annual Pass entitling them to free admission to every UK and Irish SEA LIFE Centre.

Our plan is to make a trail of them all the way from the entrance to our big ocean tank where Jersey lives with green turtle Lulu, tropical sharks and shoaling fish.

The Rescue Centre appeal received another boost recently with the news that commercial deals involving Paul the world-famous psychic octopus will also benefit the project.

For Group Prices click here

Animal Magnetism – Problem For Shark Diver

Colleagues at Blackpool Sea Life Centre were initially baffled as to why Betty the bowmouth shark should single out Martin from the four regular divers…for some serious stalking.

“It’s amazing to watch,” said Displays Supervisor Carey Duckhouse.

“Martin tries his best to get through a demonstration of diving gear and techniques, but has to constantly fend off Betty who swims up and nibbles his head.”

Then they remembered that sharks are sensitive to the tiniest bit of magnetism…and that Martin has a metal pin in his arm.

“Sharks have pores dotted around their snouts called ‘ampullae of Lorenzini’ that can detect an electric impulse as tiny as one billionth of a volt,” explained Carey.

“Bowmouth sharks home in on such impulses to find prey hidden beneath the seabed, so are probably more sensitive to them than most other species.

“We’re convinced that magnetic particles in the pin in Martin’s arm are causing little electrical discharges that only Betty can detect, and which she finds irresistible.”

Martin, 33, broke his arm two years ago in an accident on the Promenade, but recovered to complete his dive training so he could take part in demonstrations for Centre visitors.

He and three colleagues take the plunge in rotation, joining 10-foot-long sandbar and nurse sharks; six-foot-long black-tipped and white-tipped reef sharks, and others in the mighty tropical ocean tank.

For Martin that means four or five encounters a week with Betty.

“She only nibbles rather than bites,” he said. “But her teeth are so strong it feels like hard scratching, and it’s impossible to ignore.”

Diving with the sharks is so enjoyable however, that Martin would rather put up with Betty’s over-enthusiastic attention than let anyone else stand in for him.

For visitors during a special Shark Week last week…Martin and Betty’s encounters were the highlight.

Betty has been a huge favourite with Centre visitors since her arrival earlier this year…and it’s little wonder Martin is nervous of her nibbles, considering she has an incredible 47 rows of teeth in her upper jaw and 50 in the lower.

A native of the Indian and Pacific Oceans she looks like a cross between a shark and a ray and could reach nearly nine feet long when fully grown.

For Group Prices click here

Merlin Group Fun Days launches search for ‘fun fanatics’

04 August 2010 Merlin Entertainments’ Group Fun Days website has launched a search to find ‘fun fanatics’ across the country. Winners will receive tickets for them and a group of nine friends, family, colleagues or neighbours to visit any of Merlin’s 22 top UK attractions.

Unlike many other exhibitors at the show, LEGOLAND Windsor’s Pirates Landing Garden has been produced exclusively by an in-house team and is the result of a creative collaboration between the Landscape and Models & Animations departments.

The garden has been designed with families and young children firmly in mind. Visitors will see that a pirate ship has unexpectedly landed in the Johnson family’s garden whilst children are playing. Mischievous LEGO pirates can be spotted emerging from the undergrowth, searching for precious treasure and colourful LEGO brick models can be seen at every turn. LEGO flowers, plants, birds, butterflies and dragonflies are hidden within the planting and a contemporary curved white wall, multicoloured planters and a 3D sculpture have been used to illustrate the versatility of LEGO bricks. The plants, in hues of green, have been chosen for their foliage, texture and colour whilst other key plants create highlights and give a theatrical feel to the garden.

The Pirates Landing garden was designed by two LEGOLAND employees, Paula Young, landscape designer, and Paul Howard, landscape & facilities manager. Paula Young joined the company over 10 years ago as an attractions assistant, after graduating from high school in South Africa and travelling around the world.

After moving to the theme park’s landscaping department, Paula was able to combine working as a landscape technician whilst studying for a degree in Garden Design. Now as LEGOLAND Windsor’s landscape designer, Paula is responsible for creating and renewing the park’s pristine gardens set within the 150 acre site.

Paula explains: “My job is a horticulturalist’s dream as there’s such a variety of plant life here at the park. One day we’re working with 300 year old oak trees and the next, we’re creating a dessert landscape for our Kingdom of the Pharaohs area. If you take into consideration that the average sized visitor to our theme park is knee high, we have to maintain close attention to detail and ensure that the landscaping showcases the most intricate of LEGO models on display.”

She adds: “Exhibiting at this year’s Hampton Court Palace Flower Show has been a real career highlight for all the team and we’re very excited to be included in the Show Gardens section.”

The LEGOLAND Pirates Landing garden will be rebuilt at the park after the show and all of the plants and materials, including a boat from the Pirate Falls Dynamite Drench log flume, will be reused, minimising the garden’s environmental impact.

Around a third of the aggregate used for building works in the South East comes from the seabed. Nearly six million metric tonnes of marine sand and gravel are unloaded in London every day.

“Dredging obviously has implications for marine life, as well as for archaeological features like shipwrecks,” said Sea Life Senior Aquarist Todd German.

"That’s where the science comes in. Our guests will be members of the Explore the Seafloor team from Wessex Archaeology. They will be exploring the results of four regional surveys that investigated seabed habitats and archaeological features to better understand the possible effects of dredging.”

The dredging is confined to a handful of licensed areas around England and Wales, and together they add up to only 0.15-per-cent of the UK continental shelf.

Funding for the monitoring and research comes from Marine Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund.

Now the team has organised an Explore the Seafloor roadshow, which is also visiting six other Sea Life centres this summer, to raise awareness of the work being done.

“We’ll be getting youngsters involved by dressing them up as archaeologists, dredging industry staff and marine scientists,” said one of the organisers, Gemma Ingason.

“We’ll be showing them brightly coloured sonar maps revealing the contours of the seabed and then seeing if they can find the matching model by touch…inside boxes they can only get one hand inside.”

Gemma and her colleagues will also invite visitors to try and identify sea creatures captured on seafloor cameras, and to hear directly from the scientists using special audio equipment.

“Aggregate dredging is really important for construction and it contributes to many of our busy coastal towns and resorts, and yet it’s something few people are really aware of,” said Todd.

“Marine conservationists are of course very familiar with it, and some of the leading conservation groups act as consultants and advisers to the industry.

“Considering we’re all probably living in houses or working in offices built using marine aggregate, or driving on roads constructed with it, it’s something we ought to know a bit more about…and I’m delighted our visitors are going to be having such good fun in the process.”

“There have been unusual coloured lobsters found in the past,” said marine expert Todd German.

“Blue, red and yellow individuals have all made headlines, but this one is the strangest anyone has ever heard of with one side black and the other side dull red.

"He’s a fifty-million-to-one mutant all the more remarkable because his two colours are separated by a near perfect straight line along the back of his carapace,” added Todd.

More startling still is the fact that his claws – also one red and one black – are on the alternate sides, leading to the new arrival being christened ‘Harley Quin,’ after the mythical harlequin character who was often depicted in a half red, half black suit.

“From his size he’s probably five or six years old,” said Todd, “and it’s amazing that a lobster with such conspicuous colouration has survived so long without being picked up by a predator like a seal or shark.

“He could reach more than three times his current size and now he’s safe from predators could live for another sixty or seventy years or more.”

Harley has settled into a spacious display tank at the heart of the Centre’s very appropriately-named ‘Weird and Wonderful’ exhibition area.

GET YOUR PHOTO TAKEN WITH THE LEGO WORLD CUP SUNDAY 27TH JUNE

Have you ever wanted to get your hands on the World Cup?
But Lulu is well again…eating healthily and brim full of energy, and staff can’t wait to help her back into the huge ocean tank to be re-united with old friends Jersey the loggerhead turtle, tropical sharks and shoals of colourful reef fish.

Lulu’s problem was identified when she made a brief excursion from quarantine in Dorset to be given an MRI scan at a clinic in Cheltenham.

It seems the overall improvement to her health since she moved to Brighton from Blackpool ten years ago has re-awakened natural processes that have been dormant for decades.

“In spite of the fact that she had a male companion for nearly 50 years without ever producing eggs, the MRI scan revealed that her body was full of egg follicles,” explained General Manager Max Leviston.

“They were suspended in the earliest stage of development without the leathery case that fully developed eggs have, and hence were trapped inside her.”

Sea Life’s veterinary experts feared surgery might be necessary, but in light of the risky nature of the procedure decided to postpone as long as possible in the hope that Lulu would somehow recover unaided.

“It proved to be a shrewd decision,” said Max. “Her weight has gradually dropped, she has regained her appetite and all her bodily functions appear normal again.

“Our vet believes she has slowly absorbed the follicles back into her blood stream and they have now effectively been cleaned from her system.”

Had it proved necessary an operation would have been the first of its kind and the risks inherent in any surgery on exotic animals increased by Lulu’s old age.

“There is always a possibility that she could produce follicles again in a future breeding season, but we are relived that she has bounced back this time without drastic intervention.”

Lulu was originally brought into the UK by an advertising agency to star in a television commercial, after which she was given a home at London Zoo.

After approximately 20 years she was moved to a larger facility at the aquarium in Blackpool Tower, but by 2003, another 30-plus years later, had also outgrown the biggest available tank at the Tower.

She moved south to the Sea Life Centre where she became an instant favourite with visitors, and where the improved conditions and healthier diet saw a remarkable transformation in her condition…evident in the transformation of her shell, which quickly changed from soft and lacklustre to hard and shiny.

The Sea Life network prefers to rehabilitate sea turtles where possible, but in Lulu’s case – even if she had not spent most of her life in captivity and become dependent on human care – there are no surviving records of her origin.

“Different groups of green turtles around the world each have their own distinctive gene pools,” explained Max. “Consequently the Government bodies responsible for policing the marine environment would never have sanctioned Lulu’s release.”

Lulu has nevertheless proved a fine ambassador for turtle conservation efforts, helping the Brighton Aquarium raise significant funds for turtle nest protection on the Brazilian coast, and for the development of a new sea turtle rescue centre on the Greek island of Zakynthos.

Experience gained in caring for her has also enabled Sea Life to provide homes for green turtles disabled by collisions with boats in Florida Keys; as well as rescue and eventually release a number of loggerhead turtles and one rare Kemp’s Ridley Turtle found stranded on the UK coastline.
